Life With Hypertension

I shared my personnel experience of how hypertension not only affects the person who has it but also the family around him and her. Its time we created an awareness and took care of yourselves as early as possible. I am creating this space for anyone out there to also share their experience whether if they are having hypertension or are taking care of someone who has it or lost someone to hypertension. Write it and share and let's spread the word of healthy living so that the future generation or even the present generation is more aware. Write in.

Teenage Woes

Being a teenager is not easy. You are neither an adult nor a child anymore. It is like being in a Twilight zone or Lost in Space.  If I did not know better I could also suffer from Hypertension with all the stress of school, assignments and studies. Bet most of my mates feel the same.
Please share how you feel about being a teenager like me. By talking it out maybe we can get out of this Maze called Teenage hood intact and not twisted like some.
Let's reach out to each other.

Group's reflection

Kabir's Reflection
On the 13th of March, the MYP 9’s were given a PE assessment about creating a blog. Each group had to do about different diseases such as: Hypertension, Asthma, and etc. My group which was Kohji, Benjamin, Lider, Leong and me were given a blog about Hypertension.
First we planned on how we were going to do the blog. We decided to split our task in a group. Kohji’s part was to find the risk factors of hypertension; Benjamin’s part was to find why people who have hypertension must do the exercise and my part was to define Hypertension and how people get hypertension. Then I went on line and registered myself to start a blog for free. I gave the blog a name which was “Fairview Hypertension Blog”. I had started with giving the definition of hypertension on the blog first and put in some images.
Once my group members found the information of hypertension, then we started to put information in our blog. After putting the information in, then I decided to write something on a real person who had hypertension. I wanted to show what happens when you have hypertension. So I asked my mum if she knew of anyone who had high blood pressure. She told me about my about my grandfather who had hypertension. It was quite a sad story where it ended with my grandfather passing away. So I wrote about it as I wanted to share it with others as well and I think people would learn from it.
I found this PE project very fun and exciting and hopefully I will get a similar PE project next time.
 Ben's Reflection
For this term’s PE assessment, we have to make a blog with information about chronic diseases. My group have Kohji, Kabir, Leong Hong, Lider and I. My group made a blog about hypertension which means high blood pressure. We delicate the blogging job to Kabir as he is good in doing it. While Kabir is doing the blog, the other group members and I must help to find the information about the hyper tension. We made things go easier by using emails to pass through the information and putting the word document that we had research to the pen drive and pass it to Kabir. It was a very easy topic as we just have to find about the definition of hypertension, exercise regime for the hypertension and other important information about hypertension. Everything is well planned as we cooperate with each other for information. After we are done with that, we have to save everything and put the URL on Facebook so that other groups can survey our blog and to comment on it. Other than that, we have to write a reflection
on our work that we have done about the chronic diseases which we did the Hypertension. Thank you!
Kohji's reflection
Hypertension is the one of the most common chronic disease in the world. Our group members are Kabir, Leong, Lider, Benjamin and Me. We were working for the definition of the Hypertension, how it happens, what kind of the exercise is the best, and the steps for curing the hypertension. It was a best way to show what we have done for PE assessment through the blog.  I think we have done a good job, but then we have another opportunity for doing this, I would really like to make our blog attractive. Some pictures that attracts people, or some video that really good to know. The blog itself was done by Kabir, and he really done a good job, but if we have next time, I would like to make a blog by myself, to make it interesting, or maybe we can record it and show it on facebook or some other social network sites to get attention.

Lider's Reflection
At the first class that we were given this task of getting information on chronic disease we did not know what kind of topic we were going to do so we began doing research on other kinds of topics then at the end of the class the teacher told us that he was going to choose the topic for us my group got hypertension which was kind of good but we wasted one class of our time doing research on something that was worthless. So during the next class we really started our work researching and started creating our blog we added information slowly bit by bit until our blog page contained lots of information. Most of the information came from the internet. And finally we finished our blog with all the information that was needed.

Leong's Reflection

Last two weeks ago we did an assessment on chronic disease about Hypertension. Teacher told us to choose our own group members and I chose Kabir,Kohji, Benjamin and Lider.
The process is good at the start. Lider and I typed the information while Benjamin and Kohji did some research. Kabir collected the informations and made it into a blog.
I went to the blog to have a look. It was very good looking with the background. The pictures were funny with a picture of a heart “farting”.
Through this assessment we had learned how to create a blog. It also encourages people to be more careful when living.

A family member who had Hypertension

A story of my grandfather who had high blood pressure
My grandfather ( my mother's father) was a jovial and loving man. He loved his family and his grandchildren. He also loved my grandma's cooking and all types of Malaysian food. He loved eating and would reward us with buying roti canai or nasi lemak or wantan mee.
When he was in his fifties he started getting high blood pressure  and was told to take his medicine. A few years later the doctor told him he had diabetes and some of his arteries were clogged. Because of his pressure and all other health problems the doctor could not operate until his pressure was stable and he lost weight.
My grandpa went on a diet and started exercising. He  changed his lifestyle to be more healthy. He lost more than 50 pounds. Then the doctor did a bypass surgery and after some time he recovered completely. The doctor told him that after the surgery that he had another 5 years to live. But my grandpa continued to take care of his diet which was low in fat, low in salt, no sugar, high fiber, he ate alot vegetable and fruits and stopped drinking.
He lived another 15 years. Ten more years than what his doctors gave him.

He made sure that all his children eat healthy and exercised regularly. My mum and dad too make sure we eat healthy where they only allow us to eat fast food one to twice a month, we are not allowed sweet stuff like coca cola or other sugary drinks. We eat home food as much as possible. We go out to eat when we want to celebrate something. Dad is at the gym and exercises regularly. I am also thinking of joining the gym to build some muscles and be more atheletic.

My dad says that we want to have a nice body we should do weights and be active. I am definitely going to follow his advise and be like him. This way I can make sure I don't get high blood pressure or can be healthy.
We have to start young to stay fit as our body is what we make out of it.

Why must you exercise?

Why people must do these exercise?

People must do these exercise because this exercises can help people to overcome hypertension.
·         Reduce and manage mental stress through yoga, meditation and other relaxing techniques.
·          Eat a healthy diet consisting of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, which provides nutrients such as potassium and fiber.
·          Limit intake of sodium by reducing the amount of salt added to food. The total daily intake of salt or sodium chloride from all sources should be no more than  1 tea spoon. Be aware that many processed foods are high insodium. Avoid or reduce “pickles”, “papads”,  “chutneys” and soy sauces which are high in sodium.
·          Limit the intake of food high in saturated fats. Eliminate/reduce transfats in diet.
·          Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can raise blood pressure. Losing weight can help lower blood pressure.
·          Be physically active. Physical activity can help lower blood pressure. Adults should engage in moderate physicalactivity for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
·          Do not use tobacco.  Smoking injures blood vessels and speeds up the hardening of arteries. Smoking is a major riskfactor for heart disease and stroke. If not using tobacco, do not start. If already using tobacco, quitting will lower the risk for heart disease and stroke.
·          Limit alcohol use. Drinking too much alcohol is associated with high blood pressure.
·          Regularly check blood pressure. Getting blood pressure checked regularly is important because high blood pressure often has no symptoms.
·          Treat high blood pressure. If a person already has high blood pressure the doctor may prescribe medications.
·          Prevent and manage other medical conditions such as diabetes. About 60% of people who have diabetes also have
·         High blood pressure. Reduce the risk of diabetes by eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and being active. If a person already has diabetes, the doctor may prescribe medications in addition to lifestyle change.
